THE ILLUMINATED CARNIVAL AT WESTON-SUPER-MARE; AN INCREDIBLE SPECTACLE OF LIGHTS, DRAMA AND FUN
Weston-super-Mare is an old seaside resort town located on the Bristol Channel in north Somerset. Its waterfront is lined with beautiful Victorian homes and a Grand Pier, recently re-built after a fire in 2008 that destroyed the pavilion the original pier built in 1903.
The West Country Carnival is an annual celebration featuring a parade of illuminated floats (also referred to as carts). The celebration dates back to the Gunpowder Plot of 1605 and the purpose of the Carnival is to raise money for local charities.
The Illuminated Carnival is a spectacle of more than 110+ carnival floats and entertainers is not to be missed. The procession of light and music adds a vibrancy of colour and sound to the evening darkness as the procession travels slowly through the town center over a period of several hours. Some of these floats are up to 100 feet in length and have taken the members all year to design and build.
Attracting in the region of 100,00 people the streets are packed and the atmosphere was magical. This year there was a bit of rain but the canopy of umbrellas made sure that the entertainment impact was not dampened. The children looked “gob smacked” at the displays of futuristic concepts, robots, topical topics, loud music and dancers that make up each elaborate float that pass by at arms length from them. Lights, smoke and steam, twisting floats, a great carnival atmosphere grabbed the attention of the adults as well to make this procession a real family event.
The Carnival runs each year at the beginning of November, around Guy Falks Day which is the 5th November.
