Project Description
COUNTY MAYO
County Mayo is located on the west coast of Ireland. Bounded on the north east by County Sligo, the easy by Co Roscommon and the south and east by County Galway and on the west and North West the Atlantic Ocean. Mayo’s landscape is a mosaic network of rivers, streams and lakes, a county of wild, un-spoilt nature, breathtaking landscapes, wild mountain areas, a fascinating history and rich natural heritage, the source of legends that will keep story tellers going for years. There are many islands off the coast to explore and the stretches of dramatic changing coastline will inspire your imagination into thinking what the secrets of the past could tell you.
The north of the county is primarily covered by Atlantic blanket bog, a wetland terrain dominated by living peat forming plants. These views tend to be treeless but provide splashes of strong colours from light greens to deep okras depending on the time of year.
The south is particularly mountainous with the Mweelrea Mountains descending into the Killary Harbour (the only natural Fjord in Ireland) which separates the County from County Galway. The land to the east is fertile farmland while the mountains tend to be rocky and bare.
